Body massage and
its benefits

Body massage can be a wonderful thing. Given the right massage and the right therapist, a body massage can help to relax, unwind and even help with any pesky aches and pains.

There is a rich history to body massage with evidence showing that it dates all the way back to cave drawing discovered from 15,000 years ago, depicting the therapeutic touch. Health and well-being were very important to the Egyptians, Romans and Greeks therefore massage was an important part of their fitness and cleansing routines.

Massage should be no less important today and sometimes, with the modern stresses and strains of daily lives, massage can be incredibly beneficial in so many different ways therefore applicable to many different people. The list is by no means exhaustive however here are a few indications of how body massage can be beneficial to you.

* The skin has an improved appearance due to blood being brought to the surface of the body, giving a 'healthy glow' and the massage also helps to remove dead skin cells therefore allowing new skin growth to be brought to the surface.

* Your body is already a finely tuned machine and does exactly what it needs to however massage can sometimes help it on its way. Blood circulation is improved by the blood being pushed around the body through massage, therefore accelerating the delivery of oxygen and nutrients and the removal of waste products such as lactic acid, to and from around the body.

* Many of us carry a lot of tension in our shoulders (sitting hunched over a book, computer or a mobile phone anyone?) and this tension can cause pain and possibly even headaches. Massage can help relieve that tension by softening and releasing the tight muscles. Tight muscles do not only occur in the shoulders though - sore legs and feet can develop though being on your feet for long periods of time or even from carrying excess weight. Backs can hurt from bad posture or carrying heavy loads on a regular basis.  Conditions such as fibromyalgia or hypermobility can also cause soreness in muscles, resulting in regular pain. The list is endless and massage can help to alleviate some of these symptoms.

* As well as easing tight muscles, massage can also assist in the toning of muscles, therefore being beneficial to those who are trying to lose weight or hoping to tone up a little. There are certain massage movements that help to increase blood circulation and stimulate nerve endings which lead to the reduction of fatty deposits and the toning of sagging or softer areas.

* Do you have a stressful job? Do you have trouble sleeping at night? Overtiredness caused by anxiety and stress can have the opposite effect and can hinder sleep. This causes sluggishness and lack of productivity during waking hours, leading to more anxiety and stress. Vicious circle isn't it? A good massage can help to relax you and sweep all those worries away - even if only for the duration of the massage! This is 'me time' and can help to get life back in perspective by making time for you. A good massage can generally have a lasting effect for up to a week, depending on how you take care of yourself. The increase in sleep will have a positive effect on focus and clarity of thought, therefore reducing overall anxiety and improving daily life.

* Due to all the wonderful things that a massage does to your body, endorphins are released which are also known as the 'happy hormone'...who doesn't need some of those?!!
